During Installation you can choose to
install newer version side - by side, keep documents, Replace 12.04.

I did Replace

Expected:
Ubuntu 14 is installed into the partition of Ubuntu 12.04

Fact:
This option formats the full harddisk. No warning, no indication.
All other partitions are lost.

Suggestion:
1) Change Wording: Erase whole harddisk and Install Ubuntu 14.04
2) Provide an option that keeps partition layout and just installs Ubuntu 14.04
into the partition where 12.04 is installed.. => Erase Ubuntu 12.04 partition and Install Ubuntu 14.04

That is a known bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1265192

Your comments there are welcome as well as marking that you were affected.

I wish I knew some way of shaming Canonical into fixing that!
