14.04 x86 Live CD won't boot

I get a black screen with blinking cursor. The DVD drive gives some activity for a minute, then stops. If I hold down L-Shift while booting, it seems to make no difference.

The hardware is an old HP Pavilion a814x. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hmm, it could be a hardware compatibility issue. I found an old 12.04 DVD, and that booted up fine. I'm going to try installing from there, and upgrading via downloads.
