View Full Version : [SOLVED] External wifi chip does not stay connected to the internet

I have a Lenovo t440s laptop and I have dual booted Ubuntu 14.04.1 and Windows 8.1. The internal wifi chip is not recognized by ubuntu so I bought an Edimax EW-7811Un. It connects to my wifi for about 3 minutes and disconnects. If I unplug the edimax and plug it back in, it works for another 3 minutes. What can I do to make the connection more stable?

Please open a terminal with CTRL+ALT+T and show the outputs of these commands:

lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net
lsusb
lsmod
iwconfig
rfkill list

Here is the bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/852190
It's been three years, and the in kernel driver still doesn't work well.

That Edimax stick should work with this driver change:

http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/wlan-stick-524440/3/#Realtek-rtl8192cu-s-Treiber-fuer-12-04-4-und-13-10-fuer-Kernel-3-11

But there should also be an internal card...

Change the driver for the stick:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-headers-$(uname -r) linux-headers-generic build-essential dkms git
git clone https://github.com/pvaret/rtl8192cu-fixes.git
sudo dkms add ./rtl8192cu-fixes
sudo dkms install 8192cu/1.9
echo "blacklist rtl8192cu" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
Reload the driver:

sudo modprobe -rv rtl8192cu
sudo modprobe -v 8192cu
Replug the stick. Then load the driver for the internal card:

sudo modprobe -v rtl8188ee
and check the outputs of:

ifconfig -a
iwconfig
iwlist chan
lsmod
sudo iwlist scan
dmesg | egrep 'rtl8|8192'
grep rtl8 /etc/modprobe.d/*
cat /etc/modules

Are you connected via internal card?

cat /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules
