What should I backup?

Folks,

Before the next LTS version becomes available through the update manager I obviously need to backup my personal data, but what else should I backup in order to keep the other applications that I've installed since the current version was installed?

Any suggestions will be of great assistance,

I don't bother backing up applications.
I install as I discover that I need a missing application.

Ubuntu's package management is good for that. All you need to know is the name....I have never failed to remember the name of what I needed.

I find it easier that way. And it works well for me.
