HP envy notebook computer, had 13.04 running for several months, upgrading to 14.04 LTS. Burned ISO to a USB stick, booted to that, used the install tool. After the usual preliminary questions, I have the install window showing progress with the installation, and I can read many, many errors in the messages that flash as the "saving installed packages" takes it course. Does this doom the installation? More than an hour has gone by since I started the installation.

Not sure if you are still waiting for the install to finish..
To note, if you use the 14.04.1 ISO and untick download updates while installing (not sure I remember the exact wording, but it is in the very first screens), you wont have many updates to run after the install.

That said, I suppose you had checked the ISO before using it : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

What did you choose during the install ? Use the whole drive, install alongside another OS, do something else ?
