System is DELL Vostro 3500 running 12.04 6t4 bit. In the process, looks like numerous program got removed including internet access. From the CLI, I was able to determine that my evolution data base was still intact. Other data files are on separate partitions. I then rebooted into the recovery console and got network support. This allowed me to load ubuntu desktop and that got me back working. The big loss with the HWE is loss of the nVidia drivers.
