Hello all,

I would like to install Ubuntu on my new Sony laptop when it arrives in a few days. My experience with Ubuntu is minimal. I installed it once on a laptop in the past. However, I notice quite a lot of reports of issues involving it on the ultrabook. I want to ensure that I install it properly. I do want to full install Ubuntu (overwriting the recovery with it.)

I found an article:
http://steffankarger.nl/2013/12/10/ubuntu-13-10-on-the-sony-vaio-pro-13/

It does reference Ubuntu version 13.04 (opposed to the current 14.04 LTE) version so I have no idea if this would be an issue. Either way, I am asking the community if someone could make a little more sense of this article. I relatively savy with computers however this article appears to be written from a perspective of assumed experience-level (in which I am lacking.)

Just a few questions in advance of time:

1.) Is a "Ubuntu Live USB Stick" different from the USB install option on the Ubuntu website?
2.) Would I be able to preform step 1 to back-up to an external hard drive? Would the command lines be entered be the same? When do these command prompts come up?
3.) Would it be necessary to retrieve the Windows 8 key if you do not plan to use it (unless restoring the back of Windows to the same laptop)?
4.) Any way of telling if the Intel CPU Turbo Mode will work with Ubuntu?

Ultimately, I am looking for advice from anyone in the community running Ubuntu on the Sony VAIO Pro Ultrabook (either the 2013 model or the newer... my... 2014 model)?

Thank-you all!

1. No, it's the same. Instruction for making one in Windows: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows
2. Yes, you can backup to any drive that has enough free space (and a file system supporting the required file size, ie, NTFS should be fine; FAT32 has a 4GB single file size limitation which is clearly insufficient for the task you're about to commit to).
3. No, but it's strongly recommended. It's yours, you payed for it! You may not need it now but it can be useful later.
4. Yes, it works.
