OK to install Mate 1.8 on a Machine that already has Cinnamon 2.2 on Ubuntu 14.04

I'd like to play with Mate, and my current default is Cinnamon 2.2. I don't have Unity or Gnome Shell. Will I screw anything up by adding Mate?

it shouldnt. that said it is always good to have a back up of important pic , doc and such. The one law that is always in force is Murphy's law.

nope mate will co-exist with cinnamon just fine. follow the instructions here. (http://www.webupd8.org/2014/03/how-to-install-mate-18-in-ubuntu.html) as mentioned before backup any important data.
