Sound not working Xubuntu 12.04

I have xubuntu 12.04 on an Asus net book. In 12.04 ubuntu on the same machine the mic works. On xubuntu it works in neither sound recorder nor
skype. Under sound preferences the mic appears and the level is adequate. I have killed pulse and restarted it. This is a recent occurrence and may
be related to a recent update. Anything else I can do to get it working?
