We'll make this a two parter:

first, I'm interested in a good dock program-- you know, the kind that immitates the OSX dock. What options are out there? I've checked out gdesklets and the dock for that kinda sucks. adesklets' dock is a pain to configure. Are there stand alone docks?

second: I'm often asking what programs are available for a specific purpose. Music, video, now dock... is there a faster/easier way to find out about my options for a specific type of program? It seems like it would be difficult to search for that kind of thing...

thanks.

1) Take a look at Gimme (http://applications.linux.com/article.pl?sid=06/07/11/1614207&tid=13).

2) I think there is a button for selecting sections in Synaptic. You can also try the command line with apt-cache search dock.

There are a few KDE programs that would probably satisfy you. kxdocker is in the repos. KSmoothDock, seems nice, but isn't in the repositories. I've attached a checkinstall .deb from when I compiled it, as I assume as a Ubuntu user you wouldn't want to download the KDE development libs.

So, a couple of options if you don't mind some KDE libs.

I find searching the description of what you are looking for in Synaptic usually works, but you could search http://www.gnomefiles.org/ and then see if what you are after is in the repositories.
