Hi guys,

Long time admirer of Ubuntu trying to boot 14.04 from USB on my dads old XP machine.

I want to completely replace XP with Ubuntu desktop and have followed the necessary steps to create a bootable USB and also selected Boot from USB in the BIOS setting (First boot option).
The boot starts...

SYSLINUX 4.07 EDD 2013-07-25 COPYRIGHT (c) 1994-2013 H. PETER ANVIN ET AL

Then

NO CHILD NODE, ABORTING...

Any ides?

TIA.

I do not have any first hand experience with this error, but found this:

Also you may find Ubuntu too resource demaning for your dad's old maching. What are the specs on it?

And one more thing to have a look at

I think the most likely cause is that his specs are too old.
May be I should try an older version of Ubuntu?

Firstly, What the heck is this Child Mode? Secondly, Is the machine capable of USB-booting?

Firstly, it was a typo on my part. It's not Child Mode, it's Child NODE. Still no idea what that means.
Secondly, yes, the machine was capable of booting from USB, but also got the same error booting from CD.
Did not find a solution, but did find that there was a problem with CPU as was getting BSOD, so have now changed the PC.
Will try another Ubuntu load later.
