I just got this in my email.

Dear TUX Subscriber,

This week you'll notice a change in TUX. It will move from being a
free digital magazine to a paid one. Your current complimentary
subscription will be extended for 6 issues (expiring after the
January 2007 issue). That being said, this is just a note to let you
know what's happening -- there's nothing at all you need to do
today. Your free subscription will continue to be delivered to you
as you had originally requested.

When your subscription does expire, we will send you a notice
offerring you an opportunity to renew at our paid rate of just
$9.95/12 issues. In addition, since you've been a loyal subscriber,
we'll make certain to offer you a very special gift if you do decide
to renew at that time. Again though, there's nothing for you to do
today. Your free subscription to TUX will continue through January 2007.

We started TUX in 2004 because we felt strongly it was a needed
publication within the Linux community (many of our Linux Journal
readers would write in asking for exactly this, and truthfully, many
of our own staff members wanted to learn more about their Linux
desktops also). We invested revenues from our other publication,
Linux Journal, to make it possible. We've seen it as a labor of
love. Today, however, 15 issues later, we need to turn TUX into a
self-supporting publication and that's why we are asking for our
readers' help.

We promise to put more heart and effort into TUX with this
conversion. In the coming months, you can expect several new topics
and article series introduced by TUX Editor Kevin Shockey.

Please let us know how we can make TUX better for you. We strongly
encourage your feedback and suggestions; please send to
info@tuxmagazine.com.

From all of us at TUX Magazine, we sincerely thank you.

Apparently, they're going to start charging. :( At least they left me with a free subscription. :)

I got that too, still not sure if I'd buy it. But it's not that much, I like it but I don't find it that good. mayby mayby not, if they have better content then I will most likly get it.

I can understand why they are doing it but I'm afraid I'll have to go back to searching the web for similar info because I don't know if I can afford it. Before anyone says anything, I'm just barely getting by and my computer is the only luxury I have and it's built from parts given to me or that I have found at a local thrift store. And I still use dial-up because it's cheaper.

Heheh! I was supposed to make a similar thread a while ago, but you beat me to it. :D

We both have the same "expiration" date (January 2007). I think older subscribers get a longer term. Too bad, though. I was beginning to like TUX a lot, as it is one of the free magazines I'm subscribed to (the other one being Freesoftware Magazine). The subscription fee isn't really that much. Actually, it's fairly low. But I don't know if there's an easy way for me to pay for it. I don't have a credit card or bank account. I'm also not sure if it will be worth it to go through the hassle of looking for a way to send the payment. I guess I have to wait for the next few issues before I could make up my mind.

I received this E-mail yesterday:

What do you think?

I was quite surprised.

I quite enjoy the publication..even though it's quite KDE-centric, its well done and informative - spesh for newbies. Shame they couldn't do it through advertising rather than subscription, as it will probably fade away once those 6 months are up :(

It will probably die, or at least the reader count will drop with many many %. It's a good magazine, although I still think Mango Parfait ,or whatever the heck her name is, is a total bitch

Deja vu.

I also got the e-mail a few hours ago. But I saw the announcement last night (13:00 UTC). It's quite cheap, considering it's almost $10 for a whole year's subscription. I just don't like the hassle of looking for a way to send payment. (I don't have a credit card, or a bank account for that matter...)

Sorry for the double post, I never saw the earlier thread. Maybe and admin should move the posts and concatenate the threads?

Fair play to be it being charged but I'll be one less reader I'm afraid. I never read it all, only the bits that interest me so it won't be worth the cost.

I liked it cause it was free. I won't be paying for it because there was very little in it that actually helped me, it was just fun for me to read.

I, too, received the email, and replied immediately, telling them to pound sand.

Got mine yesterday as well...I like the mag and might subscribe then...

Mango Parfait is the most obnoxious writer and the worst part of the mag IMHO...my .02 worth.....

I'm not going to pay for it...

I got the same e-mail :). I enjoy the mag but don't know if it has enough content to be worth a paid subscription. I wonder what the very special gift would be? :D

Regards,
Stew2

What do you think?

I don't read Tux since I'm not a newbie or a KDE user, so it doesn't matter to me.

Well, I have a year to decide. Though, I'm not sure if I'll still need a beginners mag in a year, I've been Windows free for a year and a half.

And as said earlier - they are fairly kde oriented and I'm a gnome/fluxbox user.

Thinking about it: maybe it'd be better to donate the 10 bucks a year to the Ubuntu bounty program.

I've got a years free subscription too. I quite like the magazine (though I too dislike the Mango Parfit section), however not enough for me to want to buy it. I already subscribe to Linux Format, and that one paid subscription is enough thank you.
