I want to install the lightweight windows-like GUI called cinnamon. Sadly however, it seems that the guy who provided most of the packages has stopped supporting it. Most websites direct me to do something like this:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cinnamon

The ppa gwendal doesn't work though because the guy stopped supporting it. What should I do to install it now?

Hello and Welcome

You can see the link , but recommendations are to migrate to Linux Mint if you want Cinnamon as a stand alone desktop environment. Per the link a nightly PPA is still available. http://ubuntuportal.com/2014/05/how-to-install-cinnamon-2-2-in-ubuntu-14-04-lts.html

See post #4 in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2222794 . The poster points at a PPA containing new stable Cinnamon and Nemo packages. They were uploaded by Gwendal LeBihan, the maintainer of the Cinnamon-nightly-build PPA and former maintainer of the now-absent Cinnamon-stable PPA.

I use Cinnamon and like it. But something in the Cinnamon installation caused Unity to work poorly, not that Unity is so important once you have Cinnamon :)

List of PPAs I have found which contain current (uploaded since June 1, 2014) Cinnamon/Nemo packages. I use the ~kranich PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~kranich/+archive/cubuntu
https://launchpad.net/~tsvetko.tsvetkov/+archive/cinnamon
https://launchpad.net/~lestcape/+archive/cinnamon
