View Full Version : [ubuntu] 14.04 upgrade resolution problem, SIS 771/671

Hi,

After upgrading to 14.04 on my Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo Mobile V5535, the first time I rebooted my laptop it came up with constant errors upon logging in, causing the system to log me out again etc. etc. and it was a bit of an infinite loop. Now, though, after the second reboot, a day later, it did log in just fine but still gave me a handful of errors. Everything seems to work fine, but my screen is 'zoomed in' quite far as the only available resolution under system settings -> displays is 640 x 480 (4:3). It says drivers are OK. It looks and feels really weird, does anyone know how to fix this?

Several possibilities come to mind. Might be as simple as installing the latest propietary driver for your graphics card. You could use Synaptic or whatever you like for browsing the repository and search the brand name of your graphics card. For me, for instance, the driver metapackage to install is nvidia-current. I'm not sure what the default settings on an out-of-the-box Ubuntu are anymore but you may have to enable propietary drivers as a class. That used to be in the menu.

Once, I had this exact problem, well, same symptom I should say. For me, what worked was reinstalling xorg, thus:
sudo apt-get purge xorg
sudo apt-get install xorgI was afraid it would uninstall all my graphical programs as dependencies and I'd have to reinstall them all but it didn't. It took less than a minute.

There is at least one, maybe more, similar threads around here somewhere, that might have some other suggestions.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I'm afraid it's neither, though :-(
The SiS (my graphics card) drivers are automatically installed and currently up-to-date. Reinstalling xorg didn't do the trick either.

P.S. My laptop (Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo Mobile V5535 came with Vista, it's not an out-of-the-box Ubuntu system)

P.P.S. Adding new resolutions with xrandr also doesn't work, "xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default" for any resolutions greater than 640x480

Please run
sudo lshw -sanitize > lshw.txt and post lshw.txt in CODE tags.

This is old hardware and I recommend that you begin with a fresh install of Lubuntu 14.04, not Ubuntu.

Please ignore post #2. There are no proprietary drivers available.

I suggest that you try the xorg.conf posted in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2215422. Another poster solved the problem for an Esprimo V5535 by doing so.
