How to install two Desktop Environment in parallel

Hi,
I have already done this in past, but somehow its not working this time.

I installed Ubuntu14.04 LTS on my desktop( Dell Optilex 760), clean install, erased windows 8 and installed this.
Ubuntu worked fine. used it for sometime and then realized that its taking about 1GB after boot.

Thought of installing XFCE-desktop in parellel. installed it through get-apt.
restarted and to my surprise. I did not find the option to chose the desktop-environement at the time of login.

I logged-in and i see Ubunutu desktop themed like Xubuntu :). and the mmeoty footporint was like XFCE. Though I like this low memory footprint Ubuntu desktop-environment.
but i want to have both in parellel. Please see the attached screenshot, that shows XFCE-ed Ubuntu desktop

I have installed the XFCE session with the following commands on 14.04 and previous releases. I can't explain the XFCE wallpaper though. Unity is compiz based and XFCE uses the xfwm4 window manager.


sudo apt-get install xfce4
sudo apt-get install xfce4-goodies

The goodies are not installed by default. Try running the commands and see if any additional packages are installed, if you are missing anything the session won't show up in the login screen.

Problem is partially solved.
Now @ the login window I see an option on top-right. to select the session.
and now I can also login to XFCE or Xubuntu session...


but whats not being solved is original Ubuntu-desktop-session is gone, its still Xbuntu-ed session.
While it load initially it loads with all those original pinkish colors but then xfce colors takes the prefrence.

I have only used the XFCE session and not the Xubuntu session and can't offer suggestions on what effect that would have on the Ubuntu desktop. On the chance that something was removed try the following.
sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop


For code use the # symbol on the reply tool, just highlight the text first.

You could also try installing another lightweight desktop:


sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop lxde

This will install my own preferred lightweight desktop, and the theme problems (the odd colors) may go away.

I had wondered if it might be your display manager. Ubuntu, Xubuntu, and Ubuntu all use lightdm as a display manager (which is also what you log in to; the desktop you get after you log in is called a window manager), so that probably isn't the problem. However, just to be safe:


sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm

This will open up an interface in which you can see which display managers are installed, and change from one to another if you wish. Select lightdm, even if it's already selected, and finish.

This may be a stab-in-the-dark suggestion, but it occurred to me while reading the thread. Good luck!

yahoo... this time I got the option to select session during login.
but one problem... when i login to xfce it looks like Windows 200 interface, its not the xubuntu-desktop I belive.

XFCE is pretty plain,but can be customized pretty easily once you know your way around . Transparency can be added to panels and applications by enabling compositing in window manager tweaks and themes/ icons are available as well . Many GTK 3.10 themes include a xfwm4 theme additional artwork can be installed with the following package , but I generally use themes from the link.
sudo apt-get install xfce4-artwork

I do like some of the themes included with the shimmer package.
