Installation problems on Acer Aspire 5742

Hello!

I have tried to install Ubuntu 14.04 on our old laptop, since we got a new one. I am using an USB flash drive (4GB) for installation because the DVD drive dose not work.
When I try to install, it gets to the point where it shows the countdown ín the bottom of the screen and i can choose from Default, Help and so on. If i press anything the whole thing freezes, and if I let the countdown to finish, the same happens. Can anyone help me?

What are the specs of an Aspire 5742?
Maybe it is too old and incapable of running Ubuntu with the unity interface.

What about Xubuntu or Lubuntu, both of which need fewer resources?
