I started using Ubuntu intermittently starting back with version 7.04. I am very used to Synaptic for my software installations and have had very little success with the Ubuntu Software Center. I installed Synaptic first thing with my current version (14.04) and have been unable to find it in the application launcher (Kickoff). I was able to access it by command line ("sudo synaptic"). But, this morning I haven't been able to start it up by the command line. I am still unable to find it in the launcher. The other packages I've installed are there, just not Synaptic.

Any one got an idea on this?

Thanks...

Kevin

I seem to recall having to also install 'software-properties-gtk' but that's just based on memory, and my memory isn't very reliable :)

Would need to see all the terminal output from sudo synaptic to see what's going on. Try
pkexec synaptic too.

Thanks for the answers. I decided to go back to Gnome. Can't understand Unity, but I have a lot more experience with Gnome.

In deed, I find both gnome-shell with a few extensions and flashback w/metacity (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2220264) to just work :D
