I have an old PC with a (very slow, PIO) 5.2GB Fujitsu HDD and 256mb of dat old kind of ram with 2 notches and a GeForce 4MX, and I would like to install some kind of Ubuntu on it, but I have already tried to boot Ubuntu 13.10 (x32, obv) (via USB and DVD, but USB isn't supported via the bios, I used PLOP) and it never got through.

So I tried something lighter, like Lubuntu, and I gave up after it loaded cuz it was way too slow to be usable (mouse pointer was lagging).

If you're comfortable without a GUI, Ubuntu Server would probably run on it. Other wise I'd try Puppy Wary.

Tiny Core may also be worth a look.

It is really small, but on such an old machine it may be your only choice.

There is also a thing called Nanolinux 1.2, which is sort of TinyCore With A Colorful GUI. Kind of fun!
