Hello,
I have used Ubuntu 14.04 64bit on my notebook for quite a while (dual boot with win8.1), and everything was fine. But several days ago gcc threw a memory access error during compilation of some code. This happened three times. After the next reboot, I got an error message telling me that gcc has caused an error, and afterwards unity got messed up. After a second reboot, the screen stays black, and my activity led is blinking. I even do not see neither the login screen nor the boot screen. For data rescue purposes I wanted to boot with a live cd, but with every 64bit-Unix based on Ubuntu (didn't tried others) the same happens, regardless if I'm booting from CD, HDD or USB. When I try to boot to a 32bit system, everything works fine.
Furthermore, GRUB does not show up, I have to select my OS (Windows or Ubuntu) in my BIOS choosing the boot manager.
So, why can't I boot x64-*xe anymore, and how can I fix that?
Thank you very much!
