Hi there, I'm very new to Ubuntu, so bear with me!

Is there a compact, lightweight application or widget that can display total memory usage (or else, total swap usage), ideally in some form that's clearly colour-coded, or allows for setting for alarm levels? (Not looking for something that takes up a lot of screen real estate, gives detailed process information, or is itself a resource hog.)

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 via crouton on an Acer Chromebook C720, and this seems like it'd very handy thing to have, as space leakiness on the ChromeOS side seems rather considerable, especially if one gets at all tab-happy (as I admit I do tend to).

xfce has a panel applet called "system load monitor" (gnome/unity should have something similar as well) that should suit your needs. It displays color-coded bar graphs directly on the panel.

Thanks, that's pretty much exactly what I was looking for! I must admit that after I read this I had some serial bemusement about exactly where and how one added said panel applets, but live and learn. Job done!
