Downloaded the 14.04 iso, checked the MD5 sum, all OK.
Created a bootable USB stick and booted from it.
Got the screen that says "Do you want to try Ubuntu" etc, clicked on that, screen gows grey for a bit then this happens: (sorry about the image, I had to take it with my phone!)

Instead of waiting for this screen (http://pix.toile-libre.org/upload/original/1354179916.png) to appear, as soon as this screen (http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/_media/installation/live_cd_maverick1.png?cache=) appears press enter, then you'll see the advanced boot options (http://pix.toile-libre.org/upload/original/1354180067.png). From that screen select Check disc for defects and wait for it to complete - it takes several minutes.

If that shows no errors we'll probably need to gather some hardware info so what OS is currently running on that system?

Hi, Disk check shows no problems.
The machine is a Lenovo U410, 8GB RAM.
It has Windows 8.1 installed - but Live CDs for Ubuntu 13.04 and 13.10 both work perfectly OK on this machine.

Looks like the 14.04 live USB doesn't like USB3 ports.
I tried it in a USB 2 port and it all works perfectly OK.
