I tried to upgrade my Ubuntu 10.10 to the newest version, 11.04, but when I go through the upgrading process either through the update manager or the terminal, it tells me I have a network problem when my internet is running fine. I can't find a troubleshoot for this problem anywhere, can someone help?

Do you mean 14.04, which is the most recent version?

Are you being told you have an internet problem, or that some URLs cannot be reached?

Just do a clean install. I doubt that you can upgrade all the way to 14.04 without seriously messing up your system even if there is an upgrade path. Too much has changed.

I am being told I have a network connection problem. And it only will allow me to update to 11.04. I have found no way around it so far.

It specifically says "Fetching upgrade failed, there may be a network problem."

11.04 reached end of life and the repositories are closed and that is why the error is occurring. Please try a fresh installation of a supported version such as 12.04 or 14.04.

How do I do that? The update manager is only allowing me to update to 11.04. Do I have to do it in steps or just find somewhere to directly download a supported version?

Alex_Carpenter; Hello.

If I may offer:

Upgrading from 10.10 is a L O N G process and fraught with perils in such a successive procedure.
But, If that is what you intend to attempt:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades
For the instructions to do so.

With the above in mind, you will in all likely hood be better served to - Back Up Your personal files - and do a clean install of a current release.
12.04 is supported until April of 2017
13.10 is almost End-Of-Life
14.04 is supported until April 2019 - nicely polished and with many enhancements over 12.04.

Consider the hardware you are installing onto. Now-a-days it do take the horse power to run the flagship edition of ubuntu, might just might require a lighter edition for "older" hardware.

just what I think

All of those versions on the guide are lower than mine. Maybe I just don't get it, but I don't see how that guide can tell me how to upgrade from 10.10 to a supported version

Don't upgrade. Ever.

People in the thread are recommending a clean install: Create a bootable CD / USB stick with 14.04 and install from that as if the computer had no operative system.
