I have been using linux (mostly Ubuntu and Mint) off and on for several years. I am now in a role with a public school district and have been asked to find a solution:

We would like to track students time and activity as they enter the library. The students have an ID card with a barcode on it so they could use that to log in. Is there any programs already written in linux that could be installed on a standalone system that could handle such a task?

I have done some general searches and found a few options that might work but I would like to hear from the ubuntu community directly.

I'm not afraid to do a little command line entries and could even write a script with a little refresher.

let me know what the options are.

Thanks,

Todd

Humm - I'll do a little looking. I think what you want would actually be part of a time-keeping system, some times part of a personnel/payroll system. You may want to try an internet search with the following in the search string, then see if any of the results (1) meet your requirement (2) are free or at least free to try:

ubuntu card reader time keeping
