Skype sound was not working when I installed skype on XPS 13 with a fresh 14.04 installation. The following fixed it
Go to Skype options and Sound devices. Change microphone, speakers and ringing to HDA Intel PCH, ALC668 Analog Default Audio Device (default:CARD=PCH) using the drop down menus. That should do it. If your browser does not automatically download the skype installation file from the skype website take a look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Skype
