When I close a dialog box, or interact with some UI controls, I get a flying rectangles animation where they start small near the site of my mouse cursor, then fly out toward the edge of the desktop, getting larger as they appear to come at me. I want to turn off this animation!

Please help me to get some peace before I develop PTSD!

Thanks very much.

I'd start by browsing around System Settings > Desktop Effects. Either turn off all animations, or look in All Effects to see whether a particular animation is enabled.

I tried your suggestion, and it's still happening. I will try a reboot. (BTW: There was an animation that wasn't enabled, "Windows fall apart", but that was the closest to describing what I am seeing).
