Greetings,

I had successfully installed 13.10 on my old Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. It was running well, and along the way a 13.10 update broke it. So i found Boot-Repair-Disk and it worked one time to fix the problem. Then, another update broke 13.10 again. So, I tried to install 14.04 to no success, also tried to go back to 13.10. Used Boot-Repair-Disk a number of times. Last url i got from BRD: http://paste.ubuntu.com/7418098 this was on an attempt to erase and reinstall 13.10.

I am hoping someone may be able to help me. I am totally a newbie on Ubuntu and wanted to experiment with it to replace WinXP on my old laptop to keep it around basically for web browsing.

Help for this noob is humbly appreciated.

Regards,

Dave

More info: when i try to boot I get:

Error: attempt to read or write outside outside of disk 'hd0'
Entering rescue mode...
grub rescue>

and that is all it does.

Hi, welcome to the fora.

Your best option is a fresh install of Lubuntu (not Ubuntu) 14.04.
