14.04 problems

1. Shutdown instructions don't work. It says to click just to the right of the system icon but there is nothing there.


2. I wiped the disk of my wife's HP Notebook G7 computer before I installed ubuntu and it loaded without any glitches, however I am still getting the demand for the old HP administrative password. Sometimes it takes a couple of tries before Ubuntu is able to boot. Is there anyway I could disable that?


3. The ISO image contains 9G but the installation only required the first disc. I had my DVD burner read disc 2 and it said that there were only 970 MB available on the disk. Does anybody know what is on disc two?

1)Can you see the "gear icon (system icon?) at the rightmost position on the title bar at the top of the screen? If no maybe you have a resoution issue. If so, click on the gear, and a menu should drop down, the last choice is "Shut Down".
2)Sounds like some password had been set in the BIOS, this is not related to Ubuntu. Unset it in the BIOS if set.
3)??? the Ubuntu 64bit 14.04 iso is only 1.01G, no 9G, no second disk.

1. thanks but we found a tiny icon in the upper r.h. corner. there was nothing next to the gear icon.
2. I tried disabling it but I will try again. What is left of the old system is very unstable
3. I wondered about that because every tech I talked to said they never heard of an installation that required to discs. It started going through The same sounds as the first disc did on installation so I think that somehow the burner Copied the program twice. ( my son sells electronics and he is drooling over the new OS.)

Click on the gear. You should get a menu which includes a "Shut Down" choice.

After download:
1) md5sum check the downloaded iso

2) If using a CD/DVD, did you burn the disc as slowly as possible?

3) Did you select the media check before trying to install?

4) Did you ever do a "memory check" (another live-media menu choice) on your PC?
Doing the above can save you a lot of time struggling with a bad install media.
