Currently, Ubuntu detects the display setup (under All Settings > Displays) based on the number of monitors connected to the video card. Is it possible to have the display setup be based on monitors currently powered on?

My situation: I have 2 monitors plugged in (DVI-0 and DVI-1), but usually only 1 is powered on (DVI-1). However, the gnome login screen always defaults to DVI-0, regardless of its power state. I can move the mouse cursor (and therefore the password box) into the powered on screen, but that may not be intuitive to other users. After login, I am also able to move the mouse cursor out of the current desktop space, into the desktop belonging to the monitor that is currently turned off (DVI-0). This is pretty annoying :(

Btw, running Ubuntu desktop 14.04 here. Anyone has a solution to this?
