I would really dig a distro of Ubuntu to put on a USB drive... something between the Live CD and a full install... hardware agnostic like the Live CD, but a real install so you can add/remove apps and have user documents stored on the drive...

That would be handy dandy...

There is actually something, which enables you to have a persistant home directory stored on a usb stick while using a live cd. I would say that it's almost the same thing.

Read about it here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDPersistence

I've been playing around with this at work today for a project I'm working on. I followed the guide posted a couple of replies up but had problems getting the USB key to boot with syslinux.

Following advice on this (http://http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=71567&page=3) thread I have managed to get GRUB installed, it still has a few problems and refuses to fully boot though. I'm sure I'll get it cracked soon. I'll be documenting all of this anyway as it's a work project so I'll be sure to post my findings.
