Hi,

I'm trying to upgrade from 13.10 to 14.04 and got this after running sudo do-release-upgrade:

---8<---
Checking package manager
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Building data structures... Done

Calculating the changes

Calculating the changes

Could not determine the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the
command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal.

Restoring original system state
---8<---

The last 'Unofficial packages not provided by Ubuntu' may very well apply, but how do I determine this, so I can (hopefully) remove them?

Thanks,
Frans

You are still on saucy 13.10.

Has trusty been offered to you via a dialog box ? If not, got to software sources and make sure you have checked to be notified on new releases.

I just removed (still have a backup) all of those files and tried "sudo do-release-upgrade" again, same result.

Please make sure all you ppa and other repositories are uncheked from Software Sources.
Then run
sudo apt-get update and
sudo apt-get upgrade to make sure your system is fully up to date.
Then your can process from here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/TrustyUpgrades

Post any error message you get.

This is the error from the messagebox from update-manager (unsurprisingly it's exactly the same as for the command line version):

Of course I only tried the command line version because it's easier to paste stuff into forums.
So no difference.

Hi,

As this didn't yield any result I tried to file a bug report and found there are things like this.

This bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-upgrader/+bug/1301164) seems to be most helpful with:
"There is a long list of non official packages installed on your system that are likely responsible of blocking the upgrade. You can start by reverting all video related packages to the version of an official Ubuntu repository (i.e all xorg-edgers related packages) then try the upgrade again."

And historically:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-upgrader/+bug/1069133

So as I sort of asked in the first post, how do I find out what packages are installed from non-official ubuntu sources, I can find the ppa's but how do I know what packages are installed from them. I guess I would need to remove those ppa's and remove all packages from them, then install official versions if possible (which probably isn't possible).

Thanks

See my above post :)
You can look for the broken packages and we can try to work from there.

Please make sure you have disabled all your ppa and third party repos, thanks.

So I ran

$ sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers

Well actually I had to install ppa-purge first, then add the xorg-edgers ppa again and then purge it
It doesn't stop where it used to.

This seems to fix it, I'll let you know if it really worked :-).

Thanks,

Ah, cool :)
Found several threads with the same error and video drivers, but was not quite sure that could be your case.
