View Full Version : Dual Boot Partitioning Issue (HP Laptop-Windows 7)

Current Status: I'm not terribly new to Ubuntu and I'm familiar with the basics, however this is my first time trying to install a dual boot. Upon doing my research I've found that a) I can only have 4 disk partitions, b) each pre-loaded partition is necessary in one way or another for windows, and c) trying to combine or otherwise layer information in a partition is nonsensical. As of now the things I have covered include the Ubuntu boot DVD, knowledge on how to partition space in windows 7 (currently have 20GB of unallocated space), navigating the BIOS screens (switching boot orders and all that), and a few tutorials (the primary one I was referred to is found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvP_4J2MUEc ).

Problem: I obviously already have the 4 partitions so when I try to install Ubuntu the partitioned space is "unusable." My questions are: Is there a way to work around this so I don't inadvertently corrupt or otherwise damage Windows? If deleting a partition to make space is the only viable option, which is the most practical?

I hope I'm not creating clutter with this thread. The one's I've found thus far have only addressed the deleting of partitions and various threads on Windows 8. I would much rather not mess with some third party software to help the partitioning problem, but if it is safe and recommended I'll look into it. All help is greatly appreciated!

Many Thanks

Good advice on how to handle all four primary partitions used. - srs5694

Be sure to create recovery DVD(s) first. And a Windows repair CD.
