How to remove a persistent empty launcher item?

Somehow, an empty item has become locked to the launcher (below).

Normally, to remove an item that's been locked into the launcher, you would right-click on it and choose the "Unlock" command. But right-clicking brings up an empty context menu.

How do I remove this? I suppose I have to hack a file somewhere, but I have no idea where to look.

And... it wasn't persistent. It went away after logging out and logging in again.

Then I had to deal with Ubuntu automagically changing my default language to Chinese... but that's another story.
