Have you installed in UEFI or BIOS boot mode.
And have you installed in the same boot mode for both installs?

Are you using Something Else or manual install so you do specify to install grub2's boot loader to the external drive?

How did it fail to install?

This does not have to be just a flash drive:

i use legacy boot from bios. i have the OEM windows 7 and windows 8 and windows 8.1 and gentoo linux all boot from windows 8.1 menu.
i have not installed grub to my internal hdd.
now i installed grub to usb hdd. i now have selective boot to ubuntu only when i connect usb drive.
usb stick is so slow got tired in half of an hour of usage. then i made the dvd and tried the 4th installation trial. it worked.
now all good.
thanks for reply
