Hi, this problem has me stumped: up to 13.10 never had trouble with installing and booting.
But all the 14.04 versions (ubuntu, kubuntu etc.) install fine but refuses to boot with a " can not find root partition" ??
I tried re-installing with a separate /boot partition, same result.
Does anyone have pointers how to proceed? TIA

Welcome to the Ubuntu Forums :-)

If 13.10 is working well, I suggest that you keep it (or reinstall it), and wait for 2-3 months until the worst bugs of 14.04 LTS have been squashed. Then test it live before installing. In most cases it will work, but in some cases there are problems with the driver for some hardware, and it is better to stay with an older version. The version 13.10 has end of life in July, and after that you should choose between 12.04.4 LTS and 14.04.1 LTS (download the new point release).

Thanks for the reply, will re-install 12.04 LTS and upgrade later to 14.04 LTS.
Hardware is reasonably recent and powerfull (i5, 8GB memory, gts450, os installed on 240GB SSD) No problems with Live on USB3, and no problems with latest Fedora, Suse etc.

Good luck with 12.04.4 LTS!
