Okay, so I'm trying out Kubuntu for the 1st time ever and I'm feeling rather lost...KDE is an entirely different animal for me. Probably going to have to post questions in here for many things.
Any general advice for people new to KDE?

You are correct it is a totally different animal.
I started off with Gnome 6 years ago, but have slowly become more accustomed to KDE. Now it is my main OS.
All I can suggest is trial & error. System Settings is a good place to start, & tweak away to your hearts content.
It is far more configurable than Gnome. Also the ability to download different Themes, Workspaces, Borders etc.. from within the setting is good.
I personally Use the Glacier colour scheme with the oxyzone workspace, & add my own Desktop background. But as I say go into all the different categories, within system settings & tweak away. Even if you mess up you can always click the default button & put it back to how it was.
Or if you make a complete mess of it, delete the .kde4 folder in your home folder to go back to a vanilla Kubuntu.
Have fun.
