Hey all, new Ubuntu user here. Before switching to new version 14 I want to make sure my data wont be affected. I dual boot Ubuntu 13 and Windows XP. Think I'll have any issues? Not too terribly good at these sorts of things so I'm a bit nervous.

Welcome to the forums Appaullo. I would suggest you download the Ubuntu ISO HERE (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop) and set up a Live USB or DVD as per these instructions HERE (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows) and HERE (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/burn-a-dvd-on-windows)
Once you have done that you can try Ubuntu with the Live USB or DVD before you install and see how it works and if it is what you like without actually going through an install on your HD

edit: changed for Windows

upgrade depens on hardware to hardware. it should be ok. important thing is to keep the power running and that the process doesn't get interrupted.
even if it goes wrong data is intact since that part is not being "upgraded". system might need a reinstall then...

however there is certian event where data can be impacted and that is if you use disk encryption. see release notes for Ubuntu. there could be some issues if you use disk encryption.

Best advice I can give is to backup any important data from your windows xp install onto any kind of backup media such as burnable discs and or usb sticks and then install. I just installed Xubuntu 14.04 tonight alongside my Windows XP install and I set it up so half the drive is windows xp and the other half is Xubuntu. Oh and also once you install boot back into Windows as soon as possible and let it do it's thing with running CHKDSK so it can satisfy itself with the chaged size of your NTFS partition (the partition that Windows is on).
