No sound after an upgrade to 14.04

I upgraded to 14.04 from 13.10 two days ago and since then, I have no sound and no volume icon on my Sony Vaio. When I starts the machine, I have both, but as soon as I log in, they all disappear. Somehow, when I log in as a guest, I do have sound and volume icon; but when I log in under my account, no sound, no volume icon.

Can anyone help me, please? I did everything I found on the Internet re: alsamixer, pulseaudio... but the problem is still here. I would appreciate any help in resolving this issue. Thank you.
