View Full Version : [SOLVED] Wireless not working on Acer aspire E1-571 (i3 ver)

Hi all,

Tearing my hair out here, trying to get my Dad's laptop wireless connection working again. The wifi was working when the computer was new (early Feb) and then stopped shortly afterwards. Back then, I booted off an installation cd (we're running 12.04 LTS) and the wifi worked fine. So I booted back into the installed version and all was fine, up until today.

So today I tried the same thing (booted off the installation cd and tried to connect) but that didn't work this time. So I checked and re-installed the drivers as per this page: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2214110

This had no effect either.

lspci -nn -d 14e4: gives:

<code>
02:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Broadcom Corporation NetLink BCM57785 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe [14e4:16b5] (rev 10)
02:00.1 SD Host controller [0805]: Broadcom Corporation BCM57765/57785 SDXC/MMC Card Reader [14e4:16bc] (rev 10)

03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11bgn Wireless Network Adapter [14e4:4727] (rev 01)
</code>

Notes:

There's no problem with the router, all other devices work fine.
If the wifi is disabled using the hardware switch, it cannot be turned on again until after a reboot.
Wireless is shown as enabled in the network-manager icon dropdown, but the actual wifi network is not listed.
If I try to connect to the wifi network using 'connect to hidden wifi network' the network-manager icon throbs but never connects (the network is remembered from when it was all up and running). It will sometimes ask for a password after a while, but entering the password leads to a 'network disconnected' popup or it asks for the password again. This process usually takes a minute or two.

It's starting to feel like a dodgy hardware issue, but I'm still a complete Ubuntu noob, so I thought I'd try posting here before I start looking at replacing the wifi card.

I have to go abroad in a few days, and my Dad really needs his machine up and running before I go - please help!

Hi davedub

You need the b43 driver for you card sta/wl does not work well with it.
do the following from a terminal after connecting to a ethernet cable.

sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree

sudo modprobe -rv b43
sudo modprobe -v b43

Then reboot it should work.
if it does go to a terminal and
enter

rfkill list
and post the output here.

Go to /etc/modprob.d/blacklist/bcm43-blacklist.conf see if b43 in the list. if it is open gedit as root
gksu gedit and place a # sign in front of the line b43 or delete it.
then run these commands again
sudo modprobe -rv b43
sudo modprobe -v b43
wait a minute or so and see if wireless comes up.

you may have to reboot.

Hi Dave,

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist/bcm43-blacklist.conf did not exist. I checked /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf which did have the line, so I tried commenting it out there, but after running the modprobes and restarting nothing changed.

I have un-commented the line 'blacklist b43' in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf so it's back as it was and re-run the modprobes.

Cheers,

Davedub

Ok, Lets go back to the start.

Do the following,
Make sure b43 is not blacklisted, Make sure ssb is blacklisted. install b43 fwcutter if not already installed for now uninstall all other broadcom drivers, blacklist the following modules wl or sta.
reboot see what happens.

Hi all,

Starting with Dave's suggestions, /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf now reads

# This file lists those modules which we don't want to be loaded by
# alias expansion, usually so some other driver will be loaded for the
# device instead.

# evbug is a debug tool that should be loaded explicitly
blacklist evbug

# these drivers are very simple, the HID drivers are usually preferred
blacklist usbmouse

# snd_intel8x0m can interfere with snd_intel8x0, doesn't seem to support much
# hardware on its own (Ubuntu bug #2011, #6810)
blacklist snd_intel8x0m

# Conflicts with dvb driver (which is better for handling this device)
blacklist snd_aw2

# causes failure to suspend on HP compaq nc6000 (Ubuntu: #10306)
blacklist i2c_i801

# replaced by p54pci
blacklist prism54

# replaced by b43 and ssb.
blacklist bcm43xx

# most apps now use garmin usb driver directly (Ubuntu: #114565)
blacklist garmin_gps

# replaced by asus-laptop (Ubuntu: #184721)
blacklist asus_acpi

# low-quality, just noise when being used for sound playback, causes
# hangs at desktop session start (Ubuntu: #246969)

# ugly and loud noise, getting on everyone's nerves; this should be done by a
# nice pulseaudio bing (Ubuntu: #77010)
blacklist pcspkr

# EDAC driver for amd76x clashes with the agp driver preventing the aperture
# from being initialised (Ubuntu: #297750). Blacklist so that the driver
# continues to build and is installable for the few cases where its
# really needed.
blacklist amd76x_edac
# blacklist b43
blacklist ssb
blacklist wl
blacklist sta

not sure on the syntax for installing b43 fwcutter - none of these worked:

sudo apt-get install b43 fwcutter
sudo apt-get install b43
sudo apt-get install fwcutter

Not sure how to identify 'other broadcom drivers' either... apologies for noobness!

No change after the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf changes...

People!! We have two posters here giving conflicting methods to get poor davedub going. First, let's dispose of one myth; b43 and ssb and firmware are incorrect for this device. The modaliases for b43 and ssb are in ssb. Check here:
modinfo ssb | grep 4727Nothing, nada, zippo. Please abandon b43.

The sticky says bcmwl-kernel-source is correct for kernel versions less than 3.8, which davedub has:
Linux Ubuntu-E1-203 3.2.0-60-genericI suggest you download this: http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/bcmwl-kernel-source Be sure to get the 64-bit (amd64) version. Drag and drop it to your desktop.

Since you previously had a version of bcmwl-kernel-source installed, I assume all the prerequisites are also installed.

Install with:
cd ~/Desktop
sudo dpkg -i bcmwl*.debAfter it finishes, reboot and let us hear your report. Include:
nm-tool

not sure on the syntax for installing b43 fwcutter - none of these worked:

Code:
sudo apt-get install b43 fwcutter
sudo apt-get install b43
sudo apt-get install fwcutter

it's b43-fwcutter
But Chilli 555 seems to say that the WL driver should work with your card.
so try his suggestion first.

Poor davedub. You have, I suspect, many conflicting load and blacklist entries that your system is confused. Let's see:
cat /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
cat /etc/modulesWe may do some surgery here.

davedub

Hi Chili,

cat /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

@Ubuntu-E1-203:~$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
# This file lists those modules which we don't want to be loaded by

Let's try another package, young Dave. With a working ethernet:
sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source
wget http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/restricted/b/bcmwl/bcmwl-kernel-source_5.100.82.112+bdcom-0ubuntu3_amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i bcmwl*.debDetach the ethernet, reboot and cross your fingers!!

please also do...

sudo rm /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules
boot
thanks.

Hi All,

I ran Chili's commands and rebooted. All references to the wireless network disappeared from the network-manager icon dropdown.

I then ran Hadaka's command and re-booted. No change.

Hi Guys,

Time is really running out for me here - I am leaving the country in a couple of days, and my Dad really, really needs his computer working before I go.

Please, please help!

Kind Regards,

davedub

Obviously, the 5.100.82.112 version is not working for us. Let's try the very latest version and see if we have better luck.
sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source
rm bcmwl*.deb
wget http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/restricted/b/bcmwl/bcmwl-kernel-source_6.30.223.141+bdcom-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i bcmwl*.deb
If there is an error when installing, note it and post it here.

Detach the ethernet, reboot and cross your fingers!!

the wireless showed up an SSID i've not seen before, but after a reboot all references to wireless were missing from the network-manager icon dropdown.

I ran:

wget -N -t 5 -T 10 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/57264241/wireless_script && chmod +x wireless_script && ./wireless_script

which produced

Unfortunately, young Dave, you have one of the most difficult, tricky and stubborn wireless devices there is; sort of reminds me of an ex-girlfriend. Sometimes, logic and science doesn't work and we throw the kitchen sink at it!
sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-cw-3.10-precise-genericThen do:
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.confChange the last several lines to:
# really needed.
blacklist amd76x_edac
blacklist b43
blacklist ssb
#blacklist wl
#blacklist bcma
#blacklist brcmsmacProofread, save and close gedit.

Reboot. Hope and Pray.

Before I give up Linux and take up something a whole lot easier like inventing time travel so I can buy GOOG at 80, just confirm that you have the firmware:
ls /lib/firmware/brcmIf you have bcm43xx_hdr-0.fw and bcm43xx-0.fw, then I concede that it's either a hardware fault or that there is no known way to get it working.

Before you give up, I'd try the live DVD or USB for Ubuntu 14.04. If it works, install.

I do seem to have the right firmware:

bcm4329-fullmac-4.bin bcm43xx_hdr-0.fw brcmfmac4329.bin
bcm43xx-0.fw brcmfmac43236b.bin brcmfmac4330.bin

It looks like my quickest option is a USB wireless dongle for now - have we left the config in a state whereby it will accept a standard usb dongle?

Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate your putting in the time and I've learnt quite a bit on the way :-)

Cheers!

Before you install the USB, adjust the blacklist file to blacklist them all; something like:
# really needed.
blacklist amd76x_edac
blacklist b43
blacklist ssb
blacklist wl
blacklist bcma
blacklist brcmsmacBe sure to research the USB carefully before you buy. There are several treads here about working out of the box USB wireless devices.

Cool, thanks for that, will do.

Thanks to everyone.

Well what do you know - I have a lot of progress to report, and one remaining question:

I ordered a USB wifi dongle. This initially didn't work. I then noticed the WiFi on a totally serparate printer was also failing to see the SSID. So my attention turned to the BT HomeHub 4, which it turns out had recently done some sort of merging of it's 2.4GHz and 5GHz network SSIDs, and was only actually offering a 5GHz network - which the printer and the USB WiFi dongle couldn't see. So I reconfigured the homehub 4 to use separate SSIDs for the 2.4GHz network and the 5GHz networks and changed the channel for the 2.4GHz network. Hey presto!

~ the printer connected to the wireless network
~ the Acer (with it's USB WiFi dongle) connected to the wireless network

:-D happy days!

BUT, the built in WiFi card on the Acer is still not working.

So, I booted up from both the 12.04 and 14.04 disks and what do you know - BOTH wireless cards show up and can connect on BOTH installations - so there's no problem with the built in wireless card.

/progress

So, one last remaining issue - when I boot into the installed version of Ubuntu, only the USB WiFi dongle is shown in the network-manager icon dropdown. Having seen the built in wiress card AND the USB dongle both listed when booting from the CDs, I can only conclude that I need to put my built in wireless card settings and config back to how it was before the BT homehub 4 decided to do that weird channel merging thing.

Please could someone guide me through doings, so, I've had a go but am still too much of an Ubuntu noob!

I have run this:

wget -N -t 5 -T 10 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/57264241/wireless_script && chmod +x wireless_script && ./wireless_script

Which produced the output below. It looks to me like I'm running the wl and bcma, but I don't know if they are the correct drivers,
and I'm very unsure as how to remove all others.

By the time the system is booted up, you aren't running any of the Broadcom drivers because the drivers conflict with the Realtek and bail out:
[ 15.018259] wl: disagrees about version of symbol lib80211_get_crypto_ops
[ 15.018263] wl: Unknown symbol lib80211_get_crypto_ops (err -22)
BOTH wireless cards show up and can connect on BOTH installations How do you know which one connects? When you run:
ifconfig...do both have separate IP addresses??? I'm not saying it doesn't happen; I'm saying please help me understand HOW it happens.

When you run the live DVD or USB, which driver is in place for the internal, brcmsmac or wl?

Hey Chili,

Apologies, I wasn't clear - I should have said either card can connect, not both - wasn't too clear...

here's ifconfig whilst connected using the internal card on 14.04 running off CD:

Isn't your course of action clear? Install 14.04 LTS, decline the invitation to install Additional Drivers (read: bcmwl-kernel-source which doesn't drive your Broadcom correctly) and enjoy. Yes??

Take the USB back to the store and use the refund to by a celebratory beverage or three!

Hi Chili,

Yep, that worked, 14.04 LTS sucessfully installed - there was a bit of fiddling about to get the printer up and running again, but managed to install the drivers from the command line myself :-)

All done, thank you very much!

Awesome! I'm very glad it's working. Sometimes, newer is indeed better.
