I am an experienced computer user and programmer but new to Ubuntu.

I recently installed Ubuntu 14 x64. Let me first say it was a pleasure and a breeze, with absolutely no problems. My questions will be mostly about using Unity, which I have not tried before. Is this the correct forum for asking questions about Unity or should I be using the Desktop Environments forum ?

Welcome to the forum! I've moved the thread to Desktop Environments for you.

Please do ask your questions. But first, have a look at the first link in my sig - that may answer some of them.

Welcome to the forum :)
As Unity is the default desktop for Ubuntu I would say "ask away".
Don't worry too much because the moderators will move it if they think it is in the wrong place.
I run Ubuntu on my laptop and Xubuntu on my netbook because it does not need as many resources. When posting you can select. from the drop down menu which version is more relevant to your query.
I hope you will continue to enjoy your Ubuntu experience.

Your first step would be to press the Super(windows key) and type "help" in the dash and press enter.
Have a read of the Ubuntu Desktop Guide.

Also if you hold down the Super key an overlay will appear showing keyboard shortcuts.

Regards.
