Put them on the dock, or just press super key to open the dash to display all the recently used applications (or super + a for all applications, with the filter to choose category), it is exactly like having launchers on the desktop (+ search and menu functions) except that they don't stay there when you don't need them. Unity is designed in such a way that you don't have to clutter the desktop with random application launchers.

To add, you can also open the dash by right-clicking on the top icon in the launcher it has an Ubuntu logo) and choose "Applications".
From there you can locate your app and simply drag and drop it to the launcher.

Or you can start the app from the dash, and it will then place a temporary icon on the launcher.
You can then make the temporary icon permanent by right-clicking on it and selecting "Lock to Launcher".

If you want to rearrange the icons on the launcher, simply hold down the left mouse button while on an icon and
pull it to the right, out of the launcher, and then move it to where you want to put it and push it back in.
Sort of hard to explain, but really easy to do.
