I've just started the upgrade from 13.10 to 14.04 on my desktop and about two hours in, about one third into the package update stage, the screen has gone black and the system is unresponsive ever since.
This was a little over an hour ago. Just before that happened I opened Firefox to check something, but I'm not sure if that played any role. I've tried Ctrl+Alt+F1 etc to get to a terminal but nothing happens, likewise, return, space etc. which normally brought back the screen before don't do anything.
Any suggestions? Should I just leave it be for a few hours and see if it completes and restarts, or try hard resetting it at the risk of compromising the system? I've not used a proprietary graphics driver as far as I can remember, in case that matters.
