error description:
on startup before the user prompt the fan is rotating in full mode (as it has done for the past 6 years)
as soon as 14.04 LTS comes up (and I get the user prompt to log in) the fan is not hearable anymore.
the heat from the gpu (nvidia gefore 8800m gts) is getting from 60 degrees until 105+degrees, ==>
system shuts down and reboots.
the temp for the gpu here is the problem, and the problem also is that the fan is not running anymore under 14.04.
the failure is reproducable, and is occurring after some 10-15 minutes of operation

desired solution:
fix for 14.04 so that graphics card (fan) is working properly again, as in 11.10, 12.04, 12.10, 13.04 and 13.10

the machine:

HP Pavilion HDX9480eg (CH965EA)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T8300, 2x 2.40GHz •
RAM: 4GB (2x 2GB) •
Grafik: NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS, 512MB, HDMI •
Display: 20.1", 1680x1050, glare

comments:
My system since 11.10 worked properly, have done 12.04, 12.10, 13.04 and 13.10 upgrades. all went smoothly, throughout the past years UNTIL Today.
Installed 14.04 LTS Ubuntu on the machine:

Dear Fellows,

as nobody has yet replied I would like to re-announce the topic.
I did not find a solution for 14.04 for the failure on FAN Control yet, other than refrain from using 14.04 and revert to 13.10, where the problem does not exist.
As the support period for 13.10 will expire soon, in fact sooner than 14.10 will arrive, I might encounter a problem here to. reverting to 12.04 LTS is not an viable option.

Thank you for your time.

It sounds like a serious bug. Have you tried 14.10?

I did not dare to try 14.10 yet. Will stay on 13.10 as long as possible and then try 14.10.
Worst case scenario. Reinstall 12.04 LTS.

No-one else encountered fan control (stopping) issue yet?

You don't risk anything. A live boot of 14.10 will do.

If 14.10 is still buggy it's necessary to get attention to it.

having had 14.04 lts installed, worked fine. 1 month ago, after 3.13.0-35) experienced massive multiple freezes, sytem-hangs, and no-fans working anymore on 14.04 (3.13.0-35 was fine, all later versions wrecked)
I now use 3.16.0-24-generic, on an 14.10 install (Kernel Version: 3.16.0-23-generic)

During install fans were working, now on 3.16.0-24, Fans are working on the very first boot. (Nov 13)
I'll update this message, with each boot. Maybe anybody can advise me what to post (what info), opon occurrence of a no-show-fan-working-event.

Nov 13 22h30min (14.10 - Kernel 3.16.0-24) fans (cpu+nvidia) working < 56 degrees celsius
Nov 14 14h15min (14.10 - Kernel 3.16.0-24) 1st boot attempt blank screen ==> HW reset
Nov 14 14h16min (14.10 - Kernel 3.16.0-24) 2nd boot: Grub ("Ubuntu" selected) ==> login ==> cpu 44 deg. celsius max + nvidia 64 deg. celsius max (fan not properly running)
Nov 14 22h07min (14.10 - Kernel 3.16.0-24) 1st boot: ==> login ==> cpu 36 deg. celsius max + nvidia 67 deg. celsius max (fan not properly running) (reboot after 67 degrees)

Nov 15 16h30 (14.10- Kernel 3.16.0-23) 1st boot. after 30 min CPU 43 degrees, NVIDIA 65 ! ==> reboot

------------------------------------------------
Nov 14 23h01min (14.10 - Kernel 3.16.0-24) reboot after 67 degrees on nvida and 36 on cpu! LOGIN: Psensor shows 68 DEGREES CELSIUS for CPU and 70 for NVIDIA ==> no fan working (immediate reboot!) (whilst shutdown, fans getting to maximum)
Nov 14 23h02min (14.10 - Kernel 3.16.0-24) login ==> CPU 68 degrees, NVIDIA 70 degrees celsius! no fans working (immediate reboot)
Nov 14 23h03min (14.10 - Kernel 3.16.0-23 !!!!) ==> CPU 68 degrees, NVIDIA 71 degrees! FANS running at maximum!

3.16.0-23 is the kernel, that I installed ubuntu with, yesterday. and fans are here working. on the kernel after, not anymore...

can anybody assist in helping me finding a solution, please.
