There's a new Cloud sync service that is cross-platform called `Copy`. I first read about this at OMG! Ubuntu (‘Copy’ – New Cloud Storage Service With Apt Name, Linux Clientx (http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2013/04/cloud-storage-service-copy-for-linux)).

Copy, a relatively new entry into the ‘cloud storage’ service arena, has a very apt name. Aside from supporting Linux out of the box from day dot the rest of its offerings are, sadly, fairly predictable.
On the ‘cons’ side the privacy and security policies safeguarding your data aren’t quite as robust as competitors; it can’t auto-sync; and the app gives no indication/notification that a file has completed syncing.

The gimmick they are using is that you get 5GB for free, and for every referral you get to sign up You and Them both get +5GB bonus. So you get 5 more GB of space and the person signing up gets 10GB. So if you get 9 people to sign with your reference code up you'll 50GB of space.

It isn't as integrated as Ubuntu One, and don't know about the long-term standing of the company but I did get an account so I can explore it.

If you are interested, check out the website for Copy.com (http://www.copy.com) and if you are interested in getting an account I offer this (my) reference code so you get 10GB and I get a bonus as well.

My Reference Code : https://copy.com?r=wR3jYg

Outside of the size and cross-platform/distro aspect of it, there is little to it, but I am going to check it out anyway since I do use Ubuntu One, SkyDrive, Dropbox and more and want to see how this stacks up now, and in the future. Of course, if I could get like 100GB for free from Dropbox or UbuntuOne, I would probably not look at any offer like this. I may even be willing to drop my 25GB of SkyDrive.

Well, I can say that I personally have been using Copy.com for a while now and I am totally hooked! They offer much better features than than most other cloud storage providers.

For a limited time, if you use the following link to sign up for Copy.com, you get additional 5GB of free online storage forever, so a total of 10GB!: https://copy.com?r=imaNoO

Give a try on Copy. Unlimited file size, delta sync, "fair storage" when sync with friends, sync out of folder via shortcut / symlink. And a Linux client from the start is very nice.

@kevdog: You may be right about this thread. Some of the people posting referral links above have 0 beans! I've decided to sign up for an account, but I used Dragonbite's referral link instead of the later ones.

My experience so far has been pretty good. The Linux client program is distributed as a ".tgz" file rather than a deb package, which is a bit annoying. However, it does have a nice Ubuntu-looking tray icon. And the fact that you can get 22 GB of space without even referring a single friend is great.

Are referral links allowed on ubuntuforums? Perhaps a mod can comment on that. I'll assume that they're okay for now:

@TheGurkha: I took the directory and put it into a directory in my home dir, actually. You could copy the directory to "/home/your_username/opt/copy" and it works fine. Once the files are copied into place, then you simply have to go to the "x86_64" directory (I'm assuming you're on 64-bit) and run the CopyAgent program. It would be something like this:

cd /home/your_username/opt/copy/x86_64
./CopyAgent

Great, thanks you. In case anyone needs it: https://copy.com?r=RP8n0N

I been using it too. I was very glad that it has a Linux client, opposed to Google Drive (which I was using more and more over Dropbox those days).

Thanks Dragonbite for your post. I also find annoying and cumbersome for new users the tgz distribution. Added to that, when installing Copy I've found a problem that I'd like to share in case someone stumbles with it.

Installation problem:
Downloaded the Copy.tgz OK from the website link (https://copy.com/install/linux/Copy.tgz). The downloaded file weighed 2 Mb. but was broken. Both command line tar and Gnome archive viewer complained with "gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file" at extraction. I tried several times both from browser and with wget, getting always the same. BTW, no proxies nor restrictive firewalls here, plain home DSL. Other SSL downloads working without problem.

My solution:
The solution was downloading without SSL using the http://copy.com/install/linux/Copy.tgz URL (no https).
Download is now 33 Mb. and extracts OK. Anyone else experienced this?

In case it helped someone, my referral link is https://copy.com/?r=TssTrS ;)

I have over 3/4 of a terabyte of space from copy.com for free & have due to the Fair access Policy only used 117 GB, even though I have over 160GB of data there. No, I will not refer you to get another 5GB of space. I don't need anymore space ;) I have debianized thier software & will include it in upcoming Ultimate Edition 3.6, Baracuda Networks (owner of copy.com) has approved it. I have been analising thier bandwitdth consumption and memory footprint. They straight up rock, with 2 exceptions: I have over 100,000 files stored there pulled from a 4 TB raid array (raid 0 NTL). When I build and install an O/S and log in for the first time it meticulously checks each file, well 100,000 files takes a long and I do mean long time. Perhaps a md5sum check against all files and if checks good stop don't compare. I am a programmer and do fully understand what thier software is doing.

The memory footprint runs in tandum with what my issues are. 99% of users will not face what I see personally. They also have a company acct. this will allow me to share O/S's and software I am writing across the board. While I do give homage to sourceforge. Over 1.5 Million downloads of the O/S I write at an avg. of 2GB even with 32 servers pumping it is a bit too much. I am looking forward to using copy to shove O/S's & software I am writing to the net with blazing speeds. An alternative if you will. To be honest Google Drive is garbage in comparison.

If you want to install a debianized app, feel free to venture here (http://ultimateedition.info/ultimate_edition/a-new-toy-2/).

Currently they are giving 15GB as a base, then an extra 5gb to sign up with a referral link, along with 5gb more for a .edu address. A total of 25gb just for signing up, that's one of the best I've found out there that supports linux with a desktop app. Way better than my lame 3.9gb for dropbox or 5 for ubuntu one. This is a great deal of space, along with desktop integration. This is a significant enough amount to even backup a lot of pictures, especially with a few referrals.
To sign up, here's my referral link: https://copy.com?r=mOx1aw

I think Copy (https://copy.com?r=RaMUs0) is a great alternative to Ubuntu One. It offers generous 15 + 5 GB storage and is cross platform.
It should be packaged and placed in the Ubuntu repository so that people can install or remove Copy Agent easily from the Ubuntu Software Center.

I've switched to Copy. They give you 20GB free + space for refferals. The have a client for Linux and Windows. I'm running it on Saucy and Tahr with no issues. I moved all of my "cloud directories" to the Copy folder and then made symlinks so my folders show up where they should. I even have hidden folders synching. It's also encrypted - security bonus! https://copy.com?r=ix2LKE

The free service "Copy" appears to be a good replacement for Ubuntu One. including mobile clients.
You get 15Gb free, plus an extra 5Gb bonus if you recommend someone, or are you recommended by someone.
If you click on this link https://copy.com?r=D0neUY, and sign up, both you and I get the 5Gb bonus!!
If you do sign up, post your referral link they give you, here, like I did, so that others can get, and give you more bonuses.

Symlinks work great for me using Copy. I've put all of my folders into the "Copy" folder and then created symlinks so they appear where they should - even hidden folders so apps sync across my systems. BTW, Copy is Barracuda Networks. https://copy.com?r=ix2LKE

I am trying copy.com, because in my opinion it seems to be a good alternative to Ubuntu One and Dropbox and all the other online storage solutions / providers. It has a decent amount of free storage (effectively 20GB for startes) and integration for Ubuntu, Android and other Systems (Windows, MAC).

My reference link for extra 5GB is https://copy.com?r=lwbeHH .

You know how it works: you get an extra 5GB, and me too. Thanks for choosing my reference link!

I have no financial or other interest in this service. I am just a satisfied user.
I have found a nice alternative for the soon to be discontinued Ubuntu One service which I have come to rely on. It's called Copy and it works with Linux, Android, Windows, iOS & OSx. Very affordable. They start you with 15GB for free and if you refer someone else and they sign up through the referral, you and the person signing up get an additional 5 GB free each for a total of 20 GB. You can do this as many times as you like to get a lot of free storage. This is a limited time offer to generate buzz for the service.

I am currently using it in Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit and on my Galaxy S4 phone. It does a nice job. On the Ubuntu side, the folder it creates in your home directory (Copy) supports symlinks, so I just created links to various document and etc. folders that I had in Home and dragged them into the Copy folder and it all just works.

To install, when you download their Linux installer, just extract it to where ever you want. It will all be in a folder called copy_agent. Inside this folder is a folder called copy. Inside it are the installers. Choose the version you need from the choices, armv6h, x86 and x86_64. Inside the appropriate installer folder is, among other things, an executable called CopyAgent. I checked to make sure it was set as executable (it was) and then double clicked it to install. It will create the ~/Copy folder for you. Don't forget to check your e-mail after you log into it for the first time to get your free 5 GB.

In short, it's no harder than download, extract and click to install.

Here is the link to get the installer and extra free 5 GB so you will have a 20 GB account for free when you are done.

Yes, copy seems to work like Ubuntu One, but with loads more free space.
Sign up using our links (https://copy.com?r=D0neUY) posted here so we all get even more space.

The Copy Linux client seems to be tricky to get running in comparison to Ubuntu One, or the Copy client on Android and Windows.

Both Ubuntuone, dropbox (https://db.tt/3aevd1Y) and copy.com only download files to the smartphone when asked to ("download" or "favorite")

I always preferred UbuntuOne but now it's going away I have migrated to copy.com on all my machines (linux, windows, Android).

If you like to earn an additional 5Gb on top of the free 15 Gb, use this link: https://copy.com?r=VZlg7v.

If you refer others to copy.com, you will also get an additional 5Gb for each referral, as long as they install the software.

It's horrible to install compared to Ubuntu one. You need some tech knowledge for Copy. And the installation instructions miss out important things that only geeks would know. Ubuntu One was easy. And many people have problems with the App indicator not working on CopyAgent.

Ubuntu One came included in Ubuntu.. how much easier can you have it than THAT?!

Copy is not that difficult to install, though. The following code download and extract Copy client, place application code in /opt/copy/ and starts the service. In the setup wizard that starts you can elect to have it start automatically when you log in and what folders to synchronize.

wget https://copy.com/install/linux/Copy.tgz
tar -xvzf Copy.tgz

# optional clean-up
rm Copy.tgz

# If your Ubuntu is Ubuntu 64bits:
cd copy/x86_64
# If your Ubuntu is Ubuntu 32bits:
cd copy/x86

#Then:
sudo ./CopyCmd Overlay install

sudo mkdir /opt/copy
sudo cp -r * /opt/copy
cd ../..
rm -r copy
cd /opt/copy
./CopyAgent & Source of coding instructions found here (http://thinkonbytes.blogspot.com/2014/04/choosing-copy-as-file-syncing-software.html).

I used these code to install it in Ubuntu and on my openSUSE systems. Running on openSUSE threw an error but that is because openSUSE is running KDE and not Unity/Gnome.

I actually have more space in my Copy.com account than I do on the systems' hard drives! So I am considering making an "Archive" folder and not synchronizing it so I could upload files manually and store them in the Archive folder as a backup without having to worry about filling up my hard drives.

It's horrible to install compared to Ubuntu one. You need some tech knowledge for Copy. And the installation instructions miss out important things that only geeks would know. Ubuntu One was easy. And many people have problems with the App indicator not working on CopyAgent.

Ubuntu One was built into the OS, so other than setting up the account, there was not much else to do. Any replacement is going to require some installation, but this one is very easy.
I don't understand your confusion. There is almost no tech knowledge required. You should know which architecture you are using. If in doubt, look at System Settings > details and it will tell you if you are 32 bit or 64 bit. If you are running an arm processor, I assume you would know that.

Otherwise, it's entirely a gui/mouse install. You click the link provided by anyone in this message thread, https://copy.com?r=aTrLih , it will allow you to download the linux installer to (presumably) your download directory. Open the download directory and right click the tar.gz installer file it and tell it "extract here", open the resulting folder and select your architecture; arm, 32 bit or 64 bit, open that folder and double click on the CopyAgent file. It's all gui based and wizard driven, as simple as installing a lot of Windows software.

If you are having a problem with the app indicator, just log off and back onto your system and it will work.

As far as using it in its "native" folder:
In Ubuntu One, drag what you want to sync into the Ubuntu One folder.
In Copy, drag what you want to sync into the Copy folder.

As far as using it on folders outside the Ubuntu One folder or Copy folder, this is the difference:
In Ubuntu One, you would select a file or folder and right click it and select Ubuntu One > Synchronize this folder.
In Copy, you select a file or folder and right click it and select "Make Link". You then drag the resulting link icon into the Copy folder.

I hope this helps clear up any confusion you may have.

It is not as easy to use as Ubuntu One but it is my favorite alternative so far. Using symlinks is as easy as creating a link of a folder and copying it to the Copy folder. But I had to restart the system in order to get it synching for the first time.

Using this referral code https://copy.com?r=RS9B4K you get your free 20GB and I get some extra espace. :)

I am thining about setting up those symlinks between Documents, Music, etc. folders so they go into the Copy/documents, Copy/Music, Copy/etc. folders.

Any suggests or gotchas for coding for it?

Which way would I want to do this if I want the files to reside in the Copy directories, but to be able to use the existing Documents, et. al directories?

ln -s ~/Documents ~/Copy/Documents

ln -s ~/Copy/Documents ~/Documents

I have been using Copy for a few weeks now and it seems to be a very good replacement for Ubuntu One with considerably more storage space.

The Linux desktop app does need some improvements to be fully compatible with Ubuntu 14.04 but it is usable.

And the Copy Web interface could use some missing features such as the abillaty to move files and folders around from within the web interface but I am sure that will happen in the future.

I started using Copy before the Ubuntu One closure announcement - mainly because of the amount of storage that was on offer compared to other cloud storage sites.

The other thing that appeals (more so after the U1 announcement) is who they are - ie I hope that they have sufficient resources to keep the thing running!

I still think that Dropbox has the slickest set up in terms of both client and website, but the space available is so much more limited (and not particularly cheap to expand).
