Problems after upgrade 13.04 to 13.10

so apparently when i upgraded to 13.10 from 13.04 on my oldish dell xps desktop i have a problem. I need to manually configure my graphics and video card because 13.10 doesn't recognize it, or so the error message says after trying to boot from recovery mode. can anyone give me or direct me to very detail instructions on how to do this? i'seen some advice but it is along the lines of, "go into ch_root and configure it there" which is beyond my ken. If you manage to salvage 13.10 you might get into the problem again in three months when 13.10 is out of support.

Have you thought of a clean install of 14.04 in stead?

i need to salvage the stuff on my hard drive first somehow.

That can be done in a live boot of 14.04.

Sounds more than strange.

Please describe exactly how you saw that. Best with a screenshot.
