"A new open-hardware computing platform, flexible and powerful, designed for use as a desktop, laptop, or standalone board."

Hardware hackers Bunnie (http://www.bunniestudios.com/) and xobs (http://xobs.io/) are making an open source laptop. http://www.crowdsupply.com/kosagi/novena-open-laptop

The hardware specs aren't bad, quad-core CPU, but it seems overpriced for a DIY laptop. It also looks kinda ugly. I would rather just buy a cheaper Dell that runs just as good.

This looks pretty neat as a fun hacking project (maybe a little more than I could justify spending on a fun project)...but cool in any event!

Yeah its a great idea but honestly the pricing is a bit ridiculous seeing as it probably cost them less then $300 for the parts to build that machine.

I like the gas-pressurized arm for the lid. It would be neat if they used a 3D-printed case and if the keyboard had no letters. That way it would appeal to geeks who can touch type. It is not as sexy as a MacBook Air. Much closer to a UAZ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UAZ-469).

This isn't just built with off the shelf parts. Everything is open source, including the firmware, bios, gpu, etc. Its expensive because large parts of it were custom made just for this project. Nothing like this has been available ever before.
