48h ago I decided to attempt a dual-boot of Ubuntu on my Macbook Pro 5,1. Having come across a lot of good installation instructions I thought it would all be pretty straight-forward, but it wasn't. First USB flashdrive wouldn't boot, then installation DVD needed "nomodeset" etc. Took way too much time to figure out, but eventually I got Ubuntu installed alongside OSX using this (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MactelSupportTeam/AppleIntelInstallation#Detailed_How-To) tutorial. I couldn't complete the last part of it (sync partitions) because I got an error in rEFIt. The tutorial accounted for the possibility of this error and had a link (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1297229) to the solution, which sadly hasn't worked for me. When I boot my Macbook rEFIt shows an Apple and Tux, but when I click Tux all it boots to is a black screen with a blinking hyphen. Not sure if this is related to the partition sync error but I just want to boot into the damn OS, I've been spending way too much time on it already, I hope it's worth it.
