Upgrade from 13.10 to ...

I have two PC's at home, a laptop with 12.04 LTS and a desktop with 13.10 installed. Should the upcoming 14.04 LTS upgrade be applied to the 13.10 Desktop or should I skip this one and wait for the next "normal" (16.04) version?

The laptop is dual core with 1 gb of RAM and has worked flawlessly with 12.04 LTS since day one. Should I stay with it or go with the new LTS version, which will probably need more resources. Maybe its time for XFCE?

My approach is to run 13.10 until support runs out in June. After that a fresh install of 14.04.

You asked, Release 13.10 is an interim release - short lived -, so when 14.04 is released upgrade to 14.04 on that box.
12.04 is stable and has long lasting support 'till the year 2017, as it is great and stable on your machine, keep it ! If for no other reason as the backup system in the event of failure of the other.

We can expect release 14.04 to be supported 'till 2019. The interim releases after 14.04 will have mir and sysv incorporated, there is no telling at this point what the hardware requirements will be or what changes in the operating system will perchance. Cross that bridge when you get to it.

On the subject of resources I am at present running Trusty Tahr (development branch of 14.04) on the same machine I built in 2007. It has an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.40Ghz + 1GB RAM + Nvidia GT 220 1GB memory. The 14.04 to be is running great. I fully expect 16.04 to be running great on this machine. Actually due to improvements in the Linux kernel and the work done on Ubuntu for phones Ubuntu 14.04 is much better at using the CPU and RAM than 12.04 is. In my opinion. Unity is much snappier.

I agee with you and i don't use unity because of the minimize pages to the taskbar which i can do with gnome flashback-session (Metacity) i like Unity but if they would get the minimize page to the taskbar working i would use it all the time, so many other people would, pretty shame this function is not supported.
