Hi All,

I've got a box with Ubuntu 8.0.4 LTS on it. I know that this is not supported
any more so I would like to upgrade it to the latest LTS what is 12.0.4 as I know it well.

Is it possible to do it automatically as a normal dist-upgrade?
Or should I make a backup, a clean install and restore datas?
It is a production server so It would be better for me if an automatic upgrade
would be possible...

Does anyone have any experince doing it?
Thanks in advance!

it is possible but is not an automatic process see more here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades

you should have upgraded to 10.04 last year...

The next LTS 14.04 is in beta already and will be released in a few weeks. You might consider moving to it. That will give you five years of support on the server.

You said it Bro: Or should I make a backup, a clean install and restore datas?

that's the wisest decision,
if you don't want to have to pull your hair and maybe get bold (I'm kidding)! the Distros ISO Image installs takes as long as the upgrades and Clean installs will give most likely bugs free.
