I have recently had an email discussion with the Greens here in the UK and this is what M/s Lucas had to say:

"I am strongly in favour of the promotion and encouragement of open source software and work closely with European Greens on digital rights and related issues. A recent policy paper on this states:

“The source code of software used to be a highly guarded corporate secret. But the open source movement has shown that world class software can be developed out in the open, with successes such as Linux. Open source software should be used whenever there is a good existing open source alternative. When the European Union and member countries purchase new software systems they should always perform a check whether it can be developed as open source software. The development of open source software should be encourage and supported, including through EU funding, as a key public good. Universities should be encouraged to release research results as open source software. More generally, open source mechanisms that can allow researchers to collaborate and share knowledge with in other technological fields. It can be an especially useful tool for biomedical research (neglected diseases, antibiotic research) or to research targeting climate change,

We allow discussion of the politics of open source in the Ubuntu, Linux & OS Chat sub-forum (http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=434), but not here. Political discussion is not allowed anywhere in the forum. Unfortunately, this crosses the line as it is about the stance of a political party towards open source.
