What version of Ubuntu are you using? If you have 13.10 then it is supported until July 2014. If it is 12.04 then it is supported until April 2017. There is no rush. 14.04 is not released for another month and even then it is not wise to be the first to upgrade. Wait a few more weeks after the release date. There is time to become familiar with Ubuntu.

It is possible to upgrade from one version of Ubuntu to another without losing any documents but we always advise backing up important files and documents. The latest versions of Ubuntu have a tool called Backup (also called Deja Dup).

We can sign up to Ubuntu One and get 5GB of free storage. You could upload your documents to Ubuntu One and retrieve them if needed.

Of course, we can also copy those files/documents to a DVD re-writeable disk or a USB memory stick. Some of us have another partition where we keep files/documents. That gives us some protection when upgrading or reinstalling but even then it is wise to have duplicates in another location.

Regards.
